Native overclocking

( 17th - November - 2019 )

There are a number of benefits of using the Native overclocking feature instead of MSI Afterburner:

  • Easier to use - no configuration required

  • No need to install any external application for overclocking on each GPU miner

  • Applies GPU settings and overclocking faster

  • No limitations on number of GPU's

  • More GPU settings configurable (depending of GPU type)

  • Troubleshooting

  • Recent nVidia drivers requires Administrator privileges for some clocking operations like Power Limit and Temperature Limit. Go to the Options dialog, GPU Settings section, to enable Native Overclocking with Administrator privileges.

  • Use the GPU Clocking dialog, via the toolbar Tools -> GPU Clocking, for adjusting GPU settings on a single GPU to verify that all settings work as expected

  • To verify if the GPU settings were applied successfully, use the Reload button in the GPU settings dialog to reload all properties from the AMD and nVidia GPU drivers.

  • If the values show up as expected, the GPU settings and overclocking operations have been successfully applied

  • If one or more settings didn't have the expected value, please report which GPU model and which setting that didn't work together with the Awesome Miner log file.

  • Do not use the MSI Afterburner application to check if the GPU settings were applied successfully. MSI Afterburner uses different overclocking concepts than other applications and may not display the current GPU settings correctly when set from other applications.

MSI Afterburner

Known limitations

  • nVidia RTX 2000-series

o Voltage control is not supported - the controls in the MSI Afterburner application doesn't apply any voltage changes.

Configuration and automatic start

The settings for Remote Server port and Remote Server security key only needs to be changed if these parameters have been explicitly changed in the MSI software. The default values will work in all other scenarios.

MSI Afterburner and MSI Afterburner Remote Server requires Administrator privileges to run, resulting in a more complex setup to have them automatically started together with Windows. Awesome Miner can handle this configuration.

Remote Server auto start path is used to specify the full path to the location where the Remote Server is installed on the remote computers. The folder path is assumed to be identical on all remote computers. This is not the path to the MSI Afterburner user interface, but to the MSI Afterburner Remote Server.

In order for Awesome Miner Remote Agent to configure the startup, you must provide the account name that is used to run the mining and Awesome Miner Remote Agent on the remote computer. No administrator privileges are required for this account. The password for this account also needs to be specified. An empty password cannot be used. The username and password is assumed to be identical across all remote computers.

MSI Afterburner and MSI Afterburner Remote Server must be running on all computers to be controlled by Awesome Miner. The software can be downloaded from the MSI website. Install and run both the MSI Afterburner and MSI Afterburner Remote Server software.
